Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993 and 1988 respectively, Steve Shutt and Guy Lafleur would be integral parts of Montreal Canadiens teams that would capture five (5) Stanley Cup championships during the 1970s, including four (4) straight between 1976 and 1979. Offered here, we present this pairing of sticks used by or issued to Shutt and Lafleur that have been team-signed by members of 1981 Team Canada Canada Cup squad and 1979-80 Montreal Canadiens. Starting with the Shutt stick, likely used by him during Team Canada's training camp (he didn't make the final roster), the Koho made example has had all the tape removed and sports wear in the form of marks over the shaft and heel with tape residue over the blade on both sides. With the Koho graphics sanded down on one side and a date stamp reading "AOU 25 1981" found on the underside of the lower shaft, "Shutt" is stamped to the upper shaft and Steve's number "22" is penned below it in now faded black marker ink. Having been signed in ballpoint pen over one side, those that have autographed the stick include Gare, Middleton, Lafleur, Gainey, Bourque, Beck, Engblom and others. With most of the autographs faded and hard to make out, it should be noted that it looks like the signature of Wayne Gretzky is observed at the top of the stick but is hard to make out. For the Lafleur stick, sporting a stamp over the upper shaft that reads "Flower 10", a date stamp that reads "19 FEV 1980" is seen on the underside of the lower shaft as well. With "Montreal Canadiens 1979-1980" penned over the upper shaft in red ink, a "Les Canadiens" notation with the team's logo and the year has been added over the blade on the forehand side. Sporting an intact foil accent over the lower shaft and having had the graphics sanded down on one side, twenty-four (24) members of that year's squad have signed the stick in thin blue marker ink that has been covered in Shellac including Mondou, Gainey, Lambert, Robinson, Cournoyer (was in training camp only before retiring the day before the season), Houle, Savard, Lupien, Gingras, Dupont, Larocque, Risebrough, Lapointe, Chartraw, Jarvis, Herron, Napier and others.
