Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Selected 25th overall by the Calgary Flames at the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Stephane Matteau
enjoyed a 13-season NHL career, playing for six different clubs. His career-defining moment
came in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals with the New York Rangers, where he scored two
overtime goals, including the legendary Game 7 winner that secured the Rangers’ first Stanley
Cup berth in 54 years. After stints with the Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Rangers and St. Louis
Blues, Matteau joined the San Jose Sharks in 1997, bringing size, versatility, and veteran
leadership to the team. He played five seasons with the Sharks from 1997 to 2002, contributing
as a key member of the emerging franchise.
Styled with an embossed and textured Sharks team crest with embroidered detailing, the jersey
features mesh sides running from the bottom hem to beneath the armpit. Tackle twill sleeve and
back numbers are present, with “Matteau” stitched in single-layer white twill letters on the
nameplate. Game use is evident throughout the body and sleeves, including snags at the
neckline, a dark stick mark on the lower front, and board burns to the crest. The satin sleeve
and bottom stripe material show pilling, with board burns on both elbows—one on the right
sleeve forming a small unrepaired hole.
