Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club’s comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
Montreal’s favourite “Little Giant” and the referee for Maurice Rocket Richard’s first NHL game, Aurel Joliat skated for 16 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, contributing to a trio of Stanley Cup championships while capturing the Hart Memorial Trophy, in 1934. Hailing directly from the archives of the Montreal Canadiens and most likely displayed originally in the Montreal Forum and possibly later at the Bell Centre, this unique photo of the superstar is an original print from noted Rice Studios, with hand-coloured accents added to the uniform including the socks and skates along with the ice surface, making the photo a true artwork that is one-of-a-kind. At 10 ½” x 13 ½”, the image has been wonderfully enhanced, with numerous brushstrokes masterfully added that are easily decipherable, with “Rice” over the bottom left corner. The paper used indicates a vintage print, with the work at some later point being mounted to a matte with silver name plaque beneath and framed (the work has been removed from the 23" x 26" frame, with the option of the winning bidder to have the frame accompany the work). The overall condition is gorgeous, with no issues visible. We should note that the image itself is well known to collectors and historians, as it has been utilized for a number of Joliat’s period hockey cards along with his 1935-36 Champion postcard. Produced by one of the sport’s most preeminent photographers, this original hand-coloured photo of Joliat is a masterpiece of vintage artisanship and will receive considerable attention. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
