Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

The 1978-79 Winnipeg Jets capped the final World Hockey Association season by defending the Avco Cup for their second straight playoff title, and third in the last four seasons of the rebel league’s seven-year existence. With the likes of Kent Nilsson, Terry Ruskowski, Morris Lukowich, playoff MVP Rich Preston and captain Lars-Erik Sjoberg leading the way, Winnipeg defeated an Edmonton Oilers squad featuring 18-year-old wunderkind Wayne Gretzky in a six-game final that brought the WHA’s existence to the end after seven seasons. This personal Avco World Trophy was presented to WHA executive director Ron Ryan, who was an assistant coach for the New England Whalers when they became the first team to win the Avco Cup in 1972-73. The names of each player on the Jets roster are displayed on the “Presented to the Winnipeg Jets World Champions 1978-79” plaque affixed to the barrel of this personal trophy that stands 12 3/4" tall.
There is a small dent to the lip of the cup atop the trophy, which has some tarnish inside the bowl. “Ron Ryan, Executive Director, World Hockey Association” plaque sits below the “The Avco World Trophy” plaque on the front of the barrel. A bit of silver loss to the plating on the cup and the base do not diminish the display of this historic final Avco Cup trophy, which has its original Balfour label on the bottom of the base.
