The 1972-73 New England Whalers capped the WHA’s inaugural season by becoming the rebel league’s first Avco Cup champions. “World Championship Trophy, presented by the World Hockey Association, Gary L. Davidson, President” reads the upper plaque on the front of the barrel of this personal Avco Cup trophy, which was awarded to Whalers assistant coach Ron Ryan and exhibits proud handling. New England went 12-3 as it roared through the 1973 Avco Cup playoffs, winning each of three playoff rounds 4-1, including a five-game final against Bobby Hull’s Winnipeg Jets. “New England Whalers, Premiere Season 1972-1973, Ron Ryan-Asst. Coach” reads the lower plaque on the barrel, while another plaque on the back of the barrel lists the members of the champion Whalers in two columns, beginning with captain Ted Green.
An historic keepsake from the WHA’s inaugural season, this personal Avco Cup trophy stands approximately 12 3/4" tall as topped by a bowl that is tilted to one side. There is substantial silver loss to the plating of the bowl and the base of the trophy. “Balfour” label is held in place by a nut within the bottom of the base.
