Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Totaling 4, these particular pucks were all used to score goals for the Philadelphia Flyers during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 NHL seasons. We have the pucks used to score the Flyers 275th goal of the 1972-73 season by Bill Flett on March 25th, the 127th goal of the 1973-74 season by Don Saleski on Jan 13th, the 169th goal of the 1973-74 season by Dave Schultz on Jan 31st and the 248th Flyers goal of the 1973-74 season by Orest Kindrachuk on March 27th.
Regarding condition, the rubberized Flyers logo on the Flett puck is clean, while the Goal Puck Program label has wear, with “Flett” almost rubbed away. The Flyers logo on the Saleski puck has some dark discolouration, with the Goal Puck Program label also exhibiting some marks and toning. The Flyers logo on the Schultz puck shows toning and is loose along the bottom left corner, with a small piece of paper affixed over-top listing the game highlights, and it can be removed if so desired, with some discolouration to the Goal Puck Program label. Lastly, the rubberized Blues logo on the Kindrachuk puck is slightly dark, with discoloration and marks to the Goal Puck Program label, with some of Kindrachuk`s name obscured.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-1973 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
