A rugged defenceman who played his junior hockey as a member of Edmonton Oil Kings, Phil Russell would be drafted 13th overall by the Chicago Black Hawks in 1972 and make the jump the National Hockey League right away, playing a total of 1016 career games in the NHL for Chicago, Atlanta, Calgary, New Jersey and Buffalo. Registering 25 points in 76 games played during his rookie season of 1972-73 and another 3 points in 16 playoff games as Chicago went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Montreal Canadiens, up on the block here is this Chicago jersey worn by Russell during his rookie year of 1972-73. A bright red durene material garment made by Wilson, a tattered and partially detached brand label is affixed to the inner collar with the jersey measuring out to roughly a size "48". Decorated over the front with Chicago's famed Indian head team crest that features beautifully chain-stitched details throughout its entirety, the shoulders of the garment have been accented with matching tomahawk alternate logo crests, once again featuring chain-stitched details throughout. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Russell's number "5" in single layer white tackle twill numerals (Chicago transitioned to dual layer white-over-black numbers on their playoff jerseys), the jersey exhibits excellent game-wear with roughly twenty-six (26) team repairs found throughout including seven (7) over the back, seven (7) on the front, one (1) on the right shoulder, one (1) on the right sleeve and ten (10) on the left sleeve, additional battle scars are observed in the form of stick marks, scrapes, board burns, board paint transfer marks and heavy pilling on the interior. With a garter style fight strap sewn into the interior through the bottom of the "5" on the reverse, the jersey is photo-matched to an included image of Russell taken during the season that shows the stick mark over the reverse hem near Russell's right hip as well as to the image over the front of his 1975-76 Topps card which shows the large team repair over the lower front. Comes with a Meigray LOA as well as their COR and an additional LOA.
