Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2022
The “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic team win over the powerful Soviet Union squad overshadowed the exciting hockey tournament that took place in Lake Placid in February, 1980. Pelle Lindbergh was 20-years-old that winter as he helped Sweden win an Olympic bronze medal. Sweden was the only team the Americans were unable to beat during the tournament. In fact, only a goal in the dying seconds allowed Team U.S.A. to salvage a 2-2 tie against Sweden in the tournament opener. Losing his life in a vehicle accident in November of 1985, this lot offers Lindbergh’s personal sports bag from the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. The two-foot long bag is about 11” wide, with the original luggage tag still attached, with the Stockholm address of Anna Lisa Lindbergh, the goalie’s mother, handwritten in black ink to the affixed tag. The bag features the Swedish hockey team’s blue and yellow Lake Placid Olympic logo and the number “97” in blue ink on each side of the bag, and manufacturer Folksam in green on each end. Exhibiting light wear from use, and originally obtained from the Lindbergh family, a photocopy of the original LOA will accompany.
