Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024

Playing his junior hockey with Hamilton, Kitchener and Toronto of the OHA, Paul Hoganson would be selected 62nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft and play a pair of games with the club during the 1970-71 season for his only action in the National Hockey League. Jumping ship to the World Hockey Association for the rival league's first season of play as a member of the Los Angeles Sharks, Hoganson would sick around in the league for most of its lifespan, suiting up for clubs like Los Angeles, Michigan/Baltimore, New England, Cincinnati and Indianapolis. Offered here, we present this seldomly seen Los Angeles Sharks jersey worn by Hoganson during the 1973-74 season, the club's last year of play in sunny California. A left over V-neck jersey from the clubs inaugural 1972-73 season made and customized by Goodman & Sons, their label, displaying a size "50" designation is sewn inside the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with a Sharks team crest in layered tackle twill that also features embroidered details as well, the sleeves and verso of the durene knit garment are styled with Hoganson's number "25" in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals while "Hoganson" is spelt out in single layer white twill letters that have been affixed directly to the jersey at the top of the reverse. Of note, through research it does not appear as though anyone ever wore the number "25" during the 1972-73 season and no name was ever sewn on and then removed for Hoganson's. Featuring a long garter style fight strap sewn into the interior, the jersey shows just light evidence of game-wear via a puck mark near the left shoulder/collar bone, pilling/fraying to the inside of the right arm and a pair of small board burn like marks near the right cuff. Showing additional wear via pilling on the interior, a fabric run at the left side of the collar, puckering behind the numbers and crest and a small hole in the right sleeve, the jersey is accompanied by a MeiGray vintage LOA and matching COR.
Addendum; The jersey is photo-matched. A number of images of Hoganson with the LA Sharks in 1973-74 have been added to the listing. An image of the back of the jersey clearly shows the specifics of the #25 on the back and especially the placement of the nameplate in correlation with the "5" with the letters "SON" a the end of the nameplate placed unevenly and more closer to the "5". The other photos on the listing are showing proper placement of the numbers on the left sleeve and back as well.
