Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
The man responsible for scoring perhaps the most famous goal in the history of hockey, Paul Henderson would suit up in 707 National Hockey League games over the course of his career with Detroit, Toronto and Atlanta while also playing a stint in the WHA as a member of Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls. Hailing from the 1965-66 season, we present this stick wielded by Henderson during the 1965-66 season. A Northland Pro Glass Fused model with "Henderson" stamped over the shaft, additional stamps from both "Olympic Sporting Goods", the Red Wings equipment supplier of the era, and "Northland Ski Mfg" grace each side of the upper shaft as well. Also sporting Henderson's number "19" penned to the upper shaft in blue marker ink, the stick retains its original tape job of black over both the handle/knob and blade. Exhibiting good game-use via numerous dark marks throughout, heaviest over the lower shaft, heel and untaped sections of the blade, other various marks and abrasions are found throughout as well including blue and red coloured board and post paint transfers. Sporting three (3) intact black accent stripes at the bottom of the shaft, a crack is observed at the bottom of the blade on the backhand side while a good sized crack and section of wood is missing from the toe.
Having been signed by fifteen (15) members of that years Red Wings squad over the forehand side of the shaft in ballpoint pen, those that have signed the stick include Gordie Howe, Norm Ullman, Ab McDonald, Floyd Smith, Don McKenney, Hank Bassen, Pete Goegan, Gary Bergman, Alex Delvecchio, Ron Murphy, Bill Gadsby, Paul Henderson and Billy Harris plus two (2) others that are unidentifiable. Of those that can be identified, the signatures appear lighter in some cases but do remain legible and able to be made out.
