Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
The most dominant team during the first decade of the 20th century, the Ottawa Hockey Club – known as the Generals throughout the late-19th century – were Stanley Cup champions in 1903, 1904, 1905 and 1906. The first championship team in 1903 was honoured by team executive Bob Shillington, with each presented with a silver nugget, the genesis of the Silver Seven moniker. We have a colourized postcard of the 1905 squad encapsulated by SGC and graded “A” Authentic, with this example especially desirable and unique due to the important handwritten text. Featuring HOFers Rat Westwick, Harry Pulford, Alfie Smith, Billy Gilmour and Frank McGee, the full seven are pictured posed in a studio setting with the Stanley Cup, with part of the text to the right of the image stating, “...was spare in last two games against Rat P. (Portage) I am writing soon. Nick"
While we were unable to pin down any particular “Nick” associated with the Seven, records from the era, especially regarding spares and substitutes, are sparse to say the least. The date of “Dec 16 05” has been written above the main text, with each player’s name nicely written over their image. The reverse remains clean, with just corner wear appearing to be the only condition issue.
