This historic antique postcard features the Ottawa Senators arriving in Vancouver in March of 1923 to take on the Vancouver Maroons of the PCHA in that year’s Stanley Cup Semi-Finals. The victorious Senators then went on to defeat the Edmonton Eskimos to earn their 3rd cup in 4 years. Frank Patrick remarked at the time that Ottawa was the greatest team he had ever seen. A prize in its own right, this 3 ½” x 5 ½” real photo postcard has been team-signed by Ottawa and includes 11 signatures on back scripted in period fountain pen. Included are Hall of Famers Punch Broadbent (deceased in 1971), Cy Denneny (deceased in 1970), Clint Benedict (deceased in 1976), George Boucher (deceased in 1960), Eddie Gerard (deceased in 1937), Frank Nighbor (deceased in 1966) and team manager Tommy Gorman (deceased 1961). With considerable wear to the postcard including multiple creases, some fraying and a chipped corner, this does nothing to infringe on the signatures that have remained exceptionally dark and vibrant, especially the Broadbent.
In addition to the players mentioned in the catalog who have signed this rare 1923 Ottawa Senators postcard are Harry Helman and Lionel Hitchman, who were both making their hockey debuts in 1922-23, team trainer Cosy Dolan and Basil O’Meara.
