Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023

In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately, this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-73 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Rarely offered as a group, we have 8 goal pucks from the program. We have pucks from; Gary Unger, who scored the St Louis Blues 99th goal of the 1972-73 season, on Dec 31, 1972; Ken Hodge, who scored the Boston Bruins 121st goal of the 1972-73 season, on Dec 9, 1972; Don Lever, who scored the Vancouver Canucks 107th goal of the 1973-74 season, on Jan 15, 1974; Greg Polis, who scored the Pittsburgh Penguins 90th goal of the 1973-74 season, on Jan 2, 1974; Jim Lorentz, who scored the Buffalo Sabres 62nd goal of the 1972-73 season, on Oct 8, 1972; Chuck Lefley, who scored the Montreal Canadiens 117th goal of the 1972-73 season, on Dec 9, 1972; Eddie Westfall, who scored the New York Islanders 87th goal of the 1972-73 season, on Jan 18, 1973; Chico Maki, who scored the Chicago Black Hawks 37th goal of the 1972-73 season, on Nov 1, 1972. The pucks show good use, with most of the rubberized team logos fairly clean, with marks and discolouration to the Goal Puck Program labels which includes a pinhole to each puck.
