Terrific find here pictures several men who starred on ice surfaces in the early part of the 20th century. This photo was taken in March of 1907 in Winnipeg, where these Montreal Wanderers recaptured the Stanley Cup after having lost it two months earlier to the Kenora Thistles. Immediately after capturing the ECAHA league title with a perfect 10-0-0 record, the Wanderers submitted a challenge to the Cup trustees, with a two-game-total-goal series being played March 23rd and 25th in Winnipeg because of unsatisfactory rink conditions in Kenora. At roughly 8 ½” x 10”, 10 team members are pictured, with the image featuring text along the bottom including “Wanderer Hockey Club” and “Winnipeg 1907”, with a small building as the backdrop, possibly the Auditorium Rink.
In rough condition with a number of flaws including warping, soiling and staining, the photo itself is also brittle, with an area of loss along the top right as well as a large tear that runs down the right hand side.
Ernie Russell (front row, second from the right) scored four goals in the Wanderers' 7-2 opening win and added another in the second game, won 6-5 by Kenora, with Montreal winning the Cup by a 12-8 margin. Seated to the right of Russell is the future head of hockey's royal family, Lester Patrick, and to the right of Patrick is goaltender Riley Hern. Hall-of-Famers standing (in the middle) are "Moose" Johnson and Hod Stuart.
