Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
An especially talented squad that were members of four different league’s throughout the first two decades of the 20th century, the Montreal Wanderers won the Stanley Cup four times during their short existence, including in 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1910. We have a seldom-seen pair of real photo postcards of the 1906-07 Montreal Wanderers, with each example taken while the Redbands were in Winnipeg to face Kenora in the 1907 Stanley Cup challenge. One image pictures the full team including management with “Winnipeg 1907”, while the second image pictures the players, with HOFers Hod Stuart, Riley Hern, Moose Johnson, Ernie Russell and Lester Patrick visible in each. Both postcards have text over the reverse, with the “Winnipeg 1907” example amusingly stating “The only team that can play hockey. Made Tom Phillips look like 30 cents”.
The “Winnipeg 1907” postcard exhibits heavy toning along with corner wear and small creases, with a number of scuffs and indentations over the left side. The second example also exhibits heavy toning along with surface and corner wear, with each player’s name handwritten over their image.
