Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
On the eve of embarking on arguably the greatest Stanley Cup dynasty in the history of the century-old NHL, the Montreal Canadiens would complete the 1974-75 season atop the Norris Division, losing in the Stanley Cup semifinals to Buffalo 4 games to 2. Rarely seen, we have a collection of 19 sticks all used by Habs players that very season. Included, we have examples from HOFers Ken Dryden, Yvan Cournoyer, Larry Robinson, Guy Lapointe, Bob Gainey, Steve Shutt and Serge Savard, along with Bouchard, Awrey, Lambert, Mahovlich, Risebrough, Roberts, Sather, Tremblay, Goldup and goaltenders Wayne Thomas and Bunny Larocque. As an added bonus, there are also 13 souvenir pucks accompanying, originating from the mid-1970s.
A more detailed breakdown of the offered sticks is as follows;
Ken Dryden - Sherwood model with partially-visible date stamp on back of paddle, with the blade tape removed. “Dryden” and “29” are stamped, with age cracking at handle, a crack at the blade.
Larry Robinson - Canadian Custom Pro with faded/aged "19 Robinson" stamped on the front of the shaft. With a ribbed white knob tape job and blade rubbed with black but no tape (fiberglass is also starting to peel at the blade). "19 L. Robinson" is also written in marker along the side.
Guy Lapointe - Canadian Custom Pro with faded/aged "5 Lapointe" stamped on the front of the shaft. Small black knob tape job on shaved handle with tape removed from the blade. There is also a crack at the heel.
Bob Gainey - Sherwood PMP with"Gainey B." and "23" factory stamped on the shaft. Small black bulldog tape at the shaved knob with more of the same tape covering the blade, with no cracking.
Yvan Cournoyer (signed) Canadian Custom Pro. We cannot make out the name stamp on the front of the shaft as the stick is shaved and cut very short, as was Yvan's style. Black bulldog knob tape job over shaved handle with more bulldog wrapping the blade, with the blade tape coming loose. There is also a crack at the heel, boldly signed on the shaft by Cournoyer.
Steve Shutt - Victoriaville with slightly shaved handle wrapped in ribbed white cloth tape with a few strips of bulldog tape at the center of the blade. "22" in marker with no name stamp. The blade is cracked, but in one piece.
Serge Savard - Canadian Custom Pro showing marks from light use with the tape removed. In excellent condition, it has "18 Savard" stamping up on the shaft that is currently faded.
Wayne Thomas - Sherwood model with "Thomas W. 30" factory name stamping and "Jan 8 1975" date stamp. Shaft and knob in white with bulldog taped blade, with a crack along the heel.
Michel Larocque - Sherwood model with "Larocque M. 1" factory name stamping. Appears to have had tape removed.
Don Awrey - Sherwood model with name and number stamp. Factory dated “Dec 30 1974”, with the blade and handle tape intact.
Glen Sather - Sherwood model with name and number stamp. Factory dated “12 Fev 1975”. The tape jobs over the blade and handle are intact, with a splinter along the bottom of the blade.
Pete Mahovlich - Sherwood model with name and number stamped on. Factory dated Apr 9 1975, with the white tape at the knob intact, with a bare blade.
Pierre Bouchard - Tape removed or unused Canadian Custom Pro with "26. P. Bouchard" name stamp.
Doug Risebrough – Canadien Custom Pro with knob tape removed and black tape on blade. "8. Risebrough" name stamp appears, with wear also present along the blade bottom.
Yvon Lambert (signed) - Autographed on blade, all tape removed. Sherwood PMP model dated “Avr 9 1975” at the factory.
Jim Roberts - Used a Lafleur model Louisville Slugger, taped at the knob and blade in bulldog, with aged and faded graphics.
Mario Tremblay (signed) - Trembley model Louisville Slugger with aged/faded graphics. Taped in white at knob with bare blade. The stick has also been autographed.
Glen Goldup - Canadian Custom Pro with faded/aged "15. Goldup" name stamp. Taped at handle, blade rubbed black.
Unknown player - Taped at blade and handle. Canadian Custom Pro with no name stamping (faded away?)
Despite the individual notes left for each stick, a number show excessive wear from storage along with weathering, with the Dryden exhibiting wear to the Sher-Wood graphics on one side, with a few long age cracks/separations along the shaft. Despite these flaws, the stick remains solid. The Robinson, Lapointe, Savard, Risebrough, Bouchard and Tremblay sticks all have heavy weathering, especially over the topside of the shaft, with most of the graphics completely gone.
The pucks are Czech-made souvenir examples from the mid-1970s, with Kansas City, LA, St Louis, Atlanta, California, Washington, Vancouver, Toronto, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Buffalo, the Rangers and the Islanders. In varying degrees of condition, none have been overly damaged or abused.
