This Bobby Orr miniature James Norris Trophy features a silver-plated bowl with removable lid, with engraving on it revealing that it was presented by the Norris family in 1954 and goes to the “Defense Player Who Demonstrates The Greatest All-Round Ability in That Position.” The ’71-72 season marked Orr’s fifth straight Norris and he also took the Hart as MVP and then the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP, leading the Bruins to their second Stanley Cup triumph in three years. Fantastic trophy is still in its original Peterson & Sons Silversmith blue pouch and maroon box.
“In A League Of His Own” could have very well been the title of a Bobby Orr movie, the phenom from Parry Sound, Ontario possessing unparalleled greatness during an almost unbelievably prolific career cut short by injuries. Orr indeed “owned” the Norris Trophy for most of it, winning the award a record eight consecutive years while changing the way defencemen play the game. This miniature replica includes an engraved plaque on the 3” high octagonal wooden base that reads “1972 Winner – Bobby Orr – Presented to Alan Eagleson by George Graham – “Ostranders” – December 1972.” Eagleson tells the story of how Graham was the owner and president of Ostranders Jewelers and who Eagleson and Orr dealt with in Bobby’s first big endorsement deal, the Bobby Orr watch. The relationship led to Graham, who had close ties with Birks, wanting to have trophies produced and given to Eagleson. Permission was needed and obtained from NHL President Clarence Campbell to produce the replicas, with the results superb. The trophy remains in good condition, with minor silver loss along the edge of the bowl and on the pedestal base, with the upper portion slightly bent off the base now, as it’s able to unevenly swivel currently.
