Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Recently having been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the 2023 Induction Class for recognition of his play in the National Hockey League, Mike Vernon would suit up in a total of 781 games over the course of his fruitful career, backstopping both the Calgary Flames (1989) and Detroit Red Wings (1997) to Stanley Cup glory. Awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP in 1997 and a five (5) time NHL All-Star who also enjoyed stints with San Jose and Florida, offered here is this mask worn by Vernon as a member of the Sharks circa 1998-99. Constructed by Eddy Masks and painted by artist B. Ivens, who has signed and dated the artwork with his name and "98" on either side of the bucket underneath the ears, the mask sports the paint scheme that Mike would sport through all three (3) of his seasons in San Jose, with a large Sharks logo over the crown and top of the head plus teeth on either side with a teal base. Including Vernon's personal touches including "Vernie" and "29" over the backplate, the interior of the mask still shows all the padding, sweatband and chin up in place where it should be with some soiling evident from wear. Exhibiting some wear including puck marks throughout and some chipping around the edges, some surface marks and abrasions are seen throughout as well with the heaviest concentration found in the chin area. Featuring its original white cage attached to the front, more wear is observed throughout via chips, dark marks and spots orange. Of note, we were unable to locate any photos of Vernon wearing the offered mask in games, indicating that it was likely used as either a backup or that it was utilized during practice and/or training camp sessions.
