Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024

Originally the 83rd overall pick of the 1971 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers, Wayne Wood would break into the professional hockey ranks as a two-time Memorial Cup champion in 1969 and 1970 before enjoying an eleven (11) year career in the WHA and AHL where he would backstop teams such as the Providence Reds, Vancouver Blazers, Calgary Cowboys, Toronto Toros, Birmingham Bulls and Adirondack Red Wings among others in different leagues. Offered here, we present this mid-to-late-1970s game-worn fibreglass goalie mask made by noted mask maker Greg Harrison that is attributed to have been used by Wood first as a member of the Birmingham Bulls in the WHA and then with the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL. Measuring roughly 10 1/2" from top-to-bottom in the middle of the face covering, information available points to Wood using the mask in the mid-to-late-1970s while with the Bulls and also after with the AHL Adirondack Red Wings circa 1979-80/1980-81 when it was most likely painted over. With the Adirondack paint job later removed from the mask and showing evidence of wear via numerous marks and abrasions throughout the entirety of the surface, on the interior all the original padding is gone except for in the backplate, which is original to the headpiece through the strapping harness is not. Displaying the remains of a bull face paint scheme over the entirety of its surface and done so in the red, white and blue colours that Birmingham wore, action photos of Wood with the Bulls show him wearing a quite similar paint scheme on his mask though none are conclusive photo-matches. An overall gorgeous example made by one of the most notable mask makers to ever help protect the faces and heads of goaltenders, don't miss out on this one!
