Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Enjoying a three (3) year career in the National Hockey League as a member of the Detroit Red Wings that saw him win a Stanley Cup in 1950, Max McNab would take his talents out west to the New Westminster Royals of the Western Hockey League (WHL) beginning with the 1952-53 season and be a mainstay in their lineup for a total of seven (7) seasons, winning a league MVP award in 1955. Offered here, and hailing from his personal collection, we present this grouping of items from McNab's time out west with the Royals. Paced by McNab's 1955-56 WHL Official Player Contract, the agreement between him and the Royals would see him be paid a total of $6500 for the season ($75,265.63 in 2024) plus "a bonus of $500 to be paid December 24th, 1955" according to the handwritten blue ballpoint pen ink notation penned by franchise owner, Ken MacKenzie. Having been signed by MacKenzie as well as a witness but void of McNab's signature, the contract measures roughly 8 1/2" x 16" when unfolded and sports just light wear including fold lines and a small tear at the top edge. Also including a group of eight (8) late-1950s action photos, most of which are press offerings with stamps and/or penned notations on the reverse, the images are all black and white and of various sizes. Showing things such as glue residue on the reverses of some, other things worth noting include creasing, folds/humidity curves and small tears. Rounding out the lot, also included is an 8" x 12" poster commemorating the Royals 1956-57 Pacific Coast League championship that shows tape residue at the top two corners and creasing at the top and bottom plus a 1957-58 Western Hockey League yearbook that shows moderate wear throughout its entirety including creasing, colour bleed, pen marks and small tears to the covers. A McNab Family LOA will accompany.
