Marvin Palmer Morris "Cyclone" "Cy" Wentworth played his first National Hockey League game in 1927 for the Chicago Black Hawks. In 1931-32, Wentworth, who had become the picture of defensive efficiency, was named the team's captain. Near the beginning of the 1932-33 season, he was traded to the Montreal Maroons. In Montreal, Wentworth won his first and only Stanley Cup when his Maroons defeated Toronto in the 1935 finals after eliminating his old teammates from Chicago. Wentworth was Montreal's leading point-getter in those playoffs with three goals and two assists in seven games. Utterly rare and extremely desirable, we have Wentworth's marvelous wool Montreal Maroons uniform, possibly worn during that championship year. The coarse and heavy wool style, paired with photographic research, reveals that this example, with the flat middle point of the letter "M" on the chest, was most-likely worn circa 1934-35. Measuring out to a size 44, the plum sweater features creamy and thick felt forming the team crest and the player number "2" on the back. The sweater is devoid of any tagging, leading us to ponder as to its maker. Nearly 30 wool-darned team repairs turn up on the front with more fixes on the back. Each sleeve displays an additional 5 to 6 repairs and we count nine smaller holes on the arms that were not repaired and four more spots on the body that have not been sewn shut. The spectacular sweater featuring a defunct and mythical team sports tapered cream-wool cuffs and ribbed neckline and has been well-preserved. Worthy of the HOF or any advanced wool grouping, this is one special sweater. An LOA from Classic will accompany.
