Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Perhaps the greatest player the game of hockey and the National Hockey League has ever seen, Mario Lemieux needs no introduction and during the 1980s and 1990s was the only one capable of holding a candle with the likes of Wayne Gretzky and his greatness. Playing only twenty-two (22) games during the 1993-94 regular season due to injury, posting seventeen (17) goals and twenty (20) assists for thirty-seven (37) points overall, "Super Mario" would also skate in all six (6) of Pittsburgh's playoff contests against the Washington Capitals and record four (4) goals and three (3) assists. A two-time Stanley Cup champion as a player and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997, offered here is this video-matched Penguins jersey worn by Lemieux during the 1993-94 campaign. Made by CCM, both size "54" and CCM labels have been affixed to the inner collar, with the latter having had "66C" penned to it in black marker ink. Having that the logos of CCM and the NHL embroidered into the reverse hem, the front of the desirable garment has been styled with a Penguins team crest that displays with embroidered details throughout its entirety while the distinguished captain's "C" is in place over the left breast. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Lemieux's familiar number "66" in dual layer black-over-yellow tackle twill numerals, "Lemieux" is spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Retaining its fight strap on the interior of the piece, the jersey shows good game-wear despite seeing limited action via things such as stick marks over the lower front and both sleeves plus minor board burns over both sleeves and multiple red board paint transfer spots on the backside of the right sleeve. Also sporting pilling on the interior, the jersey comes with an LOA from noted Penguins collector Casey Samuelson of Penguins Chronicles and a COA card from Double Deke Hockey listing the four (4) games the jersey was matched to, including March 22nd vs San Jose (Lemieux scored 2 points, 1 goal and 1 assist), March 24th vs Ottawa (Lemieux netted a goal), April 3rd vs Boston (Lemieux scored 4 points, 2 goals and 2 assists) and April 4th vs Tampa Bay (Lemieux had a single assist). Additionally, the jersey also comes with screen captures from the April 3rd and April 4th games showing the previously mentioned matches.
Of note, the bottom hem of the jersey has been shortened/hemmed-up, with this done after use from Lemieux, with it believed that the team prepared the jerseys for future possible back-up and/or Stanley Cup playoff use. Furthermore, the jersey was previously signed by Lemieux through the crest on the front with a black marker ink signature but it has been removed.
Addendum; Further review of the jersey shows that a light yellowish coloured stain exists in the team crest, possibly caused by the removal of the autograph.
