The Frank Mahovlich Auction - October 2005

This cream and lime wool uniform dates back to the dawn of the game of hockey, most certainly pre-1920. The long cuffs and turtle-neck collar are typical of the era and we date this one circa 1912-1920. This prime example is tagged not once, but twice in the neck by Universal of Vancouver, Canada and is crafted from 100% wool. The chest is decorated with a heavy cream felt banner proclaiming "Nelson" with a diamond-shaped patch below holding the letters "AAA". The back of the uniform sports a well-worn felt number "4" and the sleeves are striped in an alternating barber-pole fashion. Little information can be found on the team but this shirt is certainly crafted in a professional quality and our research indicates that this was a uniform from a Senior team in Nelson, British Columbia. It must be noted that, although Nelson did not boast a large population, its local hockey squad attracted a number of quality players around this period. Bothers Frank and Lester Patrick moved to the town in 1907 and both played Senior hockey with Lester joining the Nelson Pros in 1908-09 and the Nelson Seniors in 1910-11. Fellow Hockey Hall-of-Famer's Si Griffis and Tommy Phillips were both members of the Nelson Hockey Club roster in 1909-10. In extremely well-preserved condition with only four or five barely noticeable holes. A unique and utilitarian slice of hockey history.
