The Johnny Bucyk Auction - May 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2005
In 1978, a young and talented Wayne Gretzky, 17 years old at the time, was among those chosen to represent his country at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Canada. Bob Haggert, a former Leafs equipment man and licensing director for the 1978 World Juniors, amassed this incredible collection of jerseys, one from each participating team, during his visits to the team's dressing rooms. There are eight uniforms in the collection, four team-issued examples and four game worn sweaters. The CCCP jersey is fantastic! This game worn wool displays the felt number "4" and comes with a matching pair of game socks. The Suomi/Finland game worn wool uniform displays a sewn-on country name with a two tone tackle twill number "2" on the verso. Another tie-neck wool gamer worn by number "9" from Germany's roster shows nice game wear with blood stains on the chest. The wool light wool Czech National Team uniform displays the tri-color number three with matching game socks has light game use. Team issued sweaters in the collection include a yellow and blue tie-neck mesh from Sweden (#30), a beautiful blue dureen Team USA jersey, crested but not yet numbered, and a seldom-seen dureen from the Swiss Hockey Team (no number). But we have saved the best for last! This original blue knit Team Canada uniform, tagged in the collar by Athletic Knit in size 42, was the prototype uniform produced for Team Canada. The shirt was presented to the team, with the number "9" on the back and sleeves, even before Gretzky joined the squad and was assigned the number. This is the last time Canada wore blue at a world event and the design is based upon the demi-leaf first worn in the 1976 Canada Cup tournament. The rubberized front logo now sports a recently-signed bold black Wayne Gretzky autograph! This shirt is simply stunning. Rounding out the collection are the bilingual official 1978 World Juniors game program from the Canada vs. USA game, signed on the cover by Wayne Gretzky and an official boxed heavy bronze participation medallion given to all team members. From the personal collection of long-time Leafs trainer Bob Haggert with his signed letter of authenticity.
