The Johnny Bucyk Auction - May 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2005
On the night of October 14th, 1979, future Hall-of-Famer Rod Gilbert became the first New York Rangers player to have his number retired. Gilbert set and still owns the Rangers career scoring records with 406 goals, 615 assists and 1,021 points and he left the game as one of the Big Apple's favorite athletes. Equally popular among collectors are the shield-style uniforms worn by the club during 1976-77 and 1978-79, Gilbert's final two seasons. This creamy dureen team-issued jersey was made for Rod Gilbert, and is correct in every way, from the size and cresting to the letters and numbers, identical to those worn by the players. The intricately embroidered "New York Rangers" shield sits square on the chest with the highly stylistic "7" on the back and once more on each sleeve. Blue tackle twill letters spelling "Gilbert" have been individually stitched across the back shoulder above the number. Collar tagging is by Gerry Cosby, NY with a size "46" tag sewn to one side. We are offering this uniform as a team issued example, however, it must be noted that it does show light use with a pair of marks on the front and a scuff on one elbow but we can not prove that the wear was put there by Gilbert in a game situation. The back of the shirt at one time had areas of light staining which was removed leaving a few patches of pilling. This jersey is identical to the one Rod wore on the night of his retirement. A fantastic shirt made for one of the game's greatest.
