The Marcel Dionne's Auction - October 2004

Another fabulous story to go along with another awesome piece of hockey history. The most feared goal scorer of his era whose drive and competitiveness reached even loftier heights come playoff time, Maurice Richard used this stick to score his 50th career playoff goal in the 1953 Stanley Cup semi-finals against Chicago. The Hawks pushed Montreal to 7 games, but the Habs prevailed and then took Boston in 5 games as the Rocket sipped from Lord Stanley's bowl for the 3rd time and first since 1946. "CCM Pattern Made" is stamped on one side of the shaft while the Raymond Hardware Sporting Goods stamp is on the other. Black tape forms the knob with more covering the blade, although a couple of original wraps near the heel have come off over the years. The stick was originally given by Richard to a hotel owner in New Carlisle, a small town on Quebec's Gaspé coast. It was displayed in the hotel's lobby until being rescued from a fire that engulfed the building. The hero, our consignor's father, was in turn given the stick which he later passed along to his son. The lattter gentleman had Richard autograph the stick in the 1990's when the Canadiens were running their AHL farm team in Fredericton and Richard was in town as a Habs ambassador to do a season-opening ceremonial face-off. A side of the shaft reads "Humphrey good luck, de Maurice Richard". The stick has been preserved in outstanding condition. There are 2 small mounting holes to mention along with a couple of time cracks visible at the tip of the blade but the stick remains solid. Our consignor has even provided a clip of Richard shovelling home his own rebound on Chicago's Al Rollins for career playoff goal number 50. A letter explaining the provenance will also be included with this remarkable stick.
