The Marcel Dionne's Auction - October 2004
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/19/2004
Exceptional matte finish photo features the history-making 1941-42 Detroit Red Wings with "V"s and "15"s sewn on the sleeves of their sweaters. Included are a young Sid Abel, Black Jack Stewart, Don Grosso, Joe Carveth, Syd Howe, Carl Liscombe, Mud Bruneteau, Eddie Wares and goaltender Johnny Mowers. The Wings had Grosso (3rd) and Abel (5th) among the league's top point-getters that season but after a 5th place finish were surprise Stanley Cup finalists. After taking a commanding 3-0 series lead on the Maple Leafs, Detroit suffered a tragic loss as the Leafs rebounded to win the next 4 games and become the only team in Cup finals history to stage such a comeback. The Wings however responded by capturing the elusive trophy the following spring. A photographer's stamp (Bauer – something or other) is on the reverse of this photo. Some creases, mostly to the sides, and a small edge tear to mention. From the NHL's last season before the "Original Six" era began.
