Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025

The Horrors of War set was issued in 1938 by Gum Inc. At the same time, in Canada, O-Pee-Chee issued a Canadian Version. The US set totaled 288 cards; 240 low series and 48 high series. The Canadian set borrowed the same artwork, and, although noting 240 cards on the back, only the first 72 cards were produced; 48 in a first series and 24 more in a prohibitively difficult high number series. Cards numbered 49-72 are so rare that many early hobbyists didn't even know they existed. We have a group of 30 1938 O-Pee-Chee V278 Horrors of War cards including 18 high numbers, along with 13 1939 O-Pee-Chee V276 Fighting Forces cards and 14 1941 O-Pee-Chee V275 Empire Defenders cards. First, for the Horrors of War high numbers (18), 11 cards are approx EX, 4 cards are VG-EX to EX, 2 cards are PR to FR, and 1 card is PR. This is followed by the remaining 12 cards from the Horrors of War set, with 7 cards approx EX, 2 cards are FR and 3 cards are PR (additionally, all 30 Horrors of War cards have a small humidity curve). Next, the Fighting Forces cards (13) are mostly EX, with a few VG-EX to EX, with the exceptions cards #2 and #8 (OC top border). Lastly, the Empire Defenders cards (14) include 8 that are EX, and 6 that are FR to GD.
