Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
Perhaps still the most popular player to ever don the pinstripes of the New York Yankees after "The Great Bambino" Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle would be a staple in the Bronx Bombers lineup between 1951 and 1968 and helped the Yankees to seven (7) World Series championships over the course of his career. Names the American League MVP on three (3) occasions and winning the fabled Triple Crown in 1956, Mantle would be inducted into the hallowed halls of Cooperstown in 1974, his first year on the ballot. Passing away thirty (30) years ago in 1995, offered here is this copy of Mantle's 1953 Topps baseball card which has been graded to the tune of a VGE 4 mark from KSA. Released the year after his famed 1952 card, "The Mick" is captured over the front in a beautiful full colour image while the write-up on the reverse speaks of how baseball experts thought that the switch hitter was the greatest baseball prospect that they had ever seen. Retaining good colours and overall pleasing centering as well as corners that show some sharpness even after all these years, the card does shows two (2) light creases over the bottom corner on the front as well as light corner wear that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Also showing a tiny chip to the first layer of material at the top right corner over the front, the card is housed in a KSA holder which remains in good condition and shows just light imperfections over both sides.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this lot through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
