Proudly laying claim to having won awards such as the Calder Memorial Trophy (1994-95), Art Ross Trophy (2002-03), Hart Memorial Trophy (2002-03), two Olympic Gold Medals (1994 and 2006) and two Stanley Cups (1996 and 2001), Peter Forsberg was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014 and deservingly so. Playing in a total of seven (7) NHL All-Star Games over the course of his storied career, offered here is this Team Sweden jersey issued to Forsberg for use during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy that saw Sweden win their 2nd Olympic gold medal. Made by Nike, a brand label displaying a size "56" designation is affixed to the inner collar above additional "IIHF Authentic Collection" and "Made in Canada" that have been sewn in as well. Having had an extra piece of yellow material sewn on over the Nike swoosh logo over the reverse neckline, an additional logo has been added over the right breast while the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation crest graces the left side. Decorated over the front with Sweden's familiar "Tre Kronor" team crest in single layer blue twill, the crowns as well as "SWE" and the Olympic Rings appear over the right shoulder in a flocked material. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Forsberg's number "21" in single layer blue twill numerals, "Forsberg" is spelt out in matching style letters that have been heat pressed on across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Retaining its fight strap on the interior as well as a Nike Team Sports barcode inside the reverse hem, the jersey remains in overall excellent condition and shows no obvious signs of use after inspection. Hailing directly from the personal collection of Kimmo Leinonen, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
Additionally, also included with the lot is a grouping of Swedish hockey memorabilia which consists of a small Swedish Ice Hockey Association pennant, a glass puck from the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and a group of six Swedish Ice Hockey Association plaques gifted to opponents at various international tournaments and exhibition matches between 1976 and 1981 which display a metal plaque that features a generic Swedish player, the crest of the association and information pertaining to the event engraved at the bottom. All remaining in overall good condition, the heaviest wear is seen on the plaques including surface wear, scratches and some light damage to the wood from being nailed into a wall for display.
Born in Tampere, Finland, in 1949, and beginning his rise in the hockey ranks as a junior hockey coach while also involved in the hockey stick industry in Canada and Germany, Finnish hockey executive and writer Kimmo Leinonen had a connection to the NHL as he was employed as a scout for the New York Rangers from 1978-79 to 1982-83. As a founding member of the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979 - where he served as chairman from 2011 to 2018, Leinonen also helped to establish the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1996 and was the director of public relations and marketing for the organization from 1995 to 2007. His later career included an appointment as general secretary of the 2012 and 2013 Ice Hockey World Championships co-hosted in both Finland and Sweden. The hockey guru has written multiple books on the history of hockey in Finland, and for his great contributions to the sport, was inducted into the builder category of the Finnish Hall of Fame in 2011. He was further acknowledged as the only person from Finland to win the Paul Loicq Award in recognition for his efforts in international ice hockey in 2023. We are pleased to offer items from his personal collection that he acquired during his years as the IIHF director of public relations and marketing from 1995 to 1997, with others originating from later in his career as well as international hockey memorabilia he collected and items he was gifted.
