Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
Once called “the most talented player I have ever seen” by the iconic Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux was the only player able to compete on fairly equal footing with the one and only Wayne Gretzky. A two-time Stanley Cup champion as a player and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997, Lemieux would play a total of seventeen (17) seasons in the National Hockey League, all with the Penguins, claiming the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy on numerous occasions to go along with many other accolades as well. Offered here, we present this collection of Lemieux milestone game programs and other assorted memorabilia. Starting with the programs, included, and in no order in particular, are examples from the game in which Lemieux scored the final goal of his NHL career (November 10th, 2005 vs Montreal), the night of his famed "comeback" after being retired for the previous three (3) years (December 27th, 2000 vs Toronto), the night of the only game in which Lemieux and Sidney Crosby both faced off against Alexander Ovechkin (November 22nd, 2005 vs Washington), the night of Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky's last "head-to-head" match up (January 25th, 1997 vs New York), the 1990 NHL All-Star Game that was hosted in Pittsburgh with Lemieux scoring four (4) goals and being named game MVP, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey in which he captained Team Canada to a gold medal over Finland and finally, a program/brochure from the night Mario was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 (November 22nd, 1997). Also including a 1997 Sports Illustrated commemorative issue released upon his first retirement titled "A Tribute To Mario Lemieux" and a copy of the March 12th, 2001 issue that features Mario on the cover with the headline "The Second Coming : Mario Lemieux's Comeback Lights Up The NHL". All found to be in overall good condition with expected degrees of handling wear seen throughout the group, the final items included with the lot are a collectable coin commemorating Mario's 500th career goal and a 1984-85 Pittsburgh Penguins "The Boys of Winter" calander that features Mario in it inside the first page and was released during his rookie season.
