Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
A chance to score a octet of near-complete and complete classic O-Pee-Chee offerings from the mid-to-late and late-1980s is offered here, through these assemblies of the company's hockey releases that date from 1987-88 to 1989-90. Starting with the oldest grouping that is included, the 1987-88 set is found to be near-complete and includes 263 of the 264 cards making up the checklist while missing card #53 of Wayne Gretzky. With the star players and rookie cards found throughout showing only minor corner fuzz, this includes the examples of Lemieux, Robitaille, Oates (off-center), Roy (2nd year card), Hextall and Vernon while the examples of Tocchet and Ranford are also present but show corner wear that is worth mentioning for accuracy. For the set's from 1988-89, the first assembly, complete with all 264-cards present, includes a creased copy of Mario Lemieux as well as cards of Joe Nieuwendyk and Wayne Gretzky that have bad corners. With the rest of the stars found to be in the condition range of EX to EX-MT overall, the rookie card of Brett Hull is closer to VG-EX with the bottom left corner dinged. Of note, the cards are housed in binder pages that display with prices stickers atop of most of the cards and card #99, the checklist, is marked. For the second 1988-89 set, once again complete, the cards are all housed in binder pages and all the stars plus rookie cards show some corner wear that is to be mentioned for accuracy. The rookie card of Brett Hull is seen as being around EX-MT in this set while the 2nd year card of Patrick Roy is off-center. Finally, for the last set of cards from 1988-89, missing the rookie card of Brett Hull but otherwise complete, the set is seen as being around EX-MT to NM overall, including the key cards of names such as Lemieux, Roy, Gretzky, Shanahan, Turgeon, Probert and Nieuwendyk. Finally, to conclude the lot, all four sets are housed in binder pages, with one set having had binder pages added atop of the cards in their sheets. With all the star cards and rookie cards appearing to be in the condition range of EX-MT to NM overall, it is worth mentioning that card #330, the checklist card in the fourth (4th) set is marked.
