Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
A classic pre-war set that features a simple design, the 1937-38 World Wide Gum V356 release was challenging to piece together, sizing out to a large 135-cards in all in its checklist. Also called "Ice Kings" like World Wide's initial hockey card effort from 1933-34, the set was long believed to have been released during the 1936-37 season but extensive research on the subject years ago points to it being released during the following campaign, as the card of Howie Morenz card, which speaks of his tragic death in March of 1937, helps date the thick cardboard treasures. Offered here, we present this group of nine (9) 1937-38 World Wide Gum V356 cards that have been graded by the likes of SGC, PSA and KSA. Including examples of #19 Marvin Wentworth (SGC VG-EX+ 4.5), #72 Marty Burke (SGC VG 3), #108 Ray Malenfant RC (SGC EX+ 5.5), #106 Lester Brennan RC (SGC VG-EX 4), #109 Ken Murray RC (SGC VG-EX 4), #116 Johnny Taugher RC (SGC VG 3), #86 Pep Kelly (SGC GD+ 2.5), #35 Harold Cotton (PSA EX-MT 6) and #52 Happy Day (KSA GOOD 2). All housed in good condition holders that show just light scratches and scuffs that are worth mentioning for accuracy, also included with the lot are cards from the 1933-34 O-Pee-Chee V304A release of #18 Lorne Chabot (PSA FR 1.5), from the 1933-34 V357 World Wide Gum "Ice Kings" release of #70 Desse Roche (PSA GOOD+ 2.5), from the 1933-34 V129 Anonymous release of #21 Normie Himes and from the 1937-38 O-Pee-Chee V304E release of #140 Buzz Boll (KSA GOOD+ 2.5).
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this lot through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
