One of the eight (8) charter franchises of the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs, beginning play in the Majors during the 1901 season but founded originally in 1894, the Detroit Tigers are one of the most important franchises in Major League Baseball and have won a total of four (4) World Series titles over the course of their history. Crowned American League champions on eleven (11) occasions and owning a franchise win-loss record of 9676–9567–93 throughout their entire history, offered here is this vintage Tigers wool warm-up sweater that dates from the era of the late-1940s/early-1950s. A blue wool construction offering of a quarter-zip style that sports a Lippman's label affixed to the inner collar, a number "25" player identifier has been sewn in below the label in single layer white twill numerals. Of note, research shows that the number was worn by players such as Hank Riebe (1947-49), Hal White (1950-52) and Al Kaline (1953-54) during the prominent years that this label style is known to have been used but we could find no photos of the listed players wearing this style of sweater of anything similar. Featuring a white coloured felt swatch sewn inside the reverse hem that has had a "46" size designation chain-stitched into it, measuring the piece shows it sizes out closer to a size "58". Additionally, we explored the thought of it being a year swatch as well but research shows that what was originally "Tool Shop Sporting Goods Co." was not renamed to Lippman's until 1947. Featuring a pair of pockets over the lower front and decorated over the left breast with a grey coloured olde English "D" made of grey coloured felt, the sweater shows numerous team repairs throughout its entirety, including oversized long ones over the reverse. Additionally, some small moth holes are found throughout this remarkable piece as well.
