Well remembered for the check on Wayne Gretzky that was delivered by United States defenseman Gary Suter in the first game of the Finals that knocked the Canadian captain out of the tournament and forced him to miss the first month of the NHL season, the 1991 Canada Cup tournament witnessed yet another Canadian victory, with the host nation taking out the Americans in a two-game final. With Gretzky also claiming stake as the tournament's leading scorer, posting twelve (12) points in seven (7) games played, offered here is this Team Canada jersey that was worn during tournament practices by The Great One. An air-knit construction offering made by CCM, size "54" and Maska Air-Knit labels are affixed to the inner collar while the CCM logo has been embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front of the jersey with a rubberized Canada Cup logo that includes a Labatt sponsorship while a CCM logo in matching style seen underneath, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Gretzky's familiar number "99" in white heat-pressed numbers, which have yellowed and cracked/flaked over time. Also having had "Gretzky" spelt out over the upper reverse in matching style letters that have once again yellowed and show cracking/flaking, the jersey retains its fight strap on the interior as well as Gretzky's typically seen velcro patch inside the right hip to keep the jersey tucked into his pants. Also customized to Gretzky's specifications through the sleeves, the jersey, originally sourced from a CCM representative, shows no obvious signs of wear on the exterior pertaining to on-ice use and just some minor wash evidence via fading and loose threads to the Maska tag that is affixed to the inner collar. Of note, the jersey shows some sun fading, mostly on the reverse, which is worth noting for accuracy. An LOA from Joe Esposito will accompany the piece.
