Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
The first MLB player in history to have his uniform number retired, Lou Gehrig spent parts of 17 seasons with the Yankees, and despite playing in Babe Ruth’s shadow, the one-time Triple Crown winner was voted the greatest first baseman of all-time by the Baseball Writers' Association in 1969. We have an original International News photo of The Iron Horse encapsulated as Type 1 by PSA and deemed "Authentic". At 7" x 8 1/2", Gehrig is pictured at bat, in full swing, with the catcher eyeing the skyward-hit ball. There is an International News Photo stamp on the reverse with "Lou Gehrig" handwritten in pencil. There are no issues noticeable for the photo, with a few minor scratches to the PSA holder to note. Overall, an especially charming and highly desirable image of "the luckiest man on the face of the earth".
