Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
One of the oldest known sports today, with 2,000-year-old depictions on the walls of tombs in Egypt and stone carvings indicating that Sumerians, who lived in what is now Iraq, boxed at least 5,000 years ago, boxing got its start as an exhausting and brutal spectacle and grew into an international affair that has produced some of the world’s greatest athletes. Offered here, we present this lot of signed boxing that features signatures of some of the best to ever don the gloves including George Chuvalo, Mike Tyson, Jake LaMotta and Chuck Wepner. All signed framed displays or photographs, the collection is paced by a framed display of George Chuvalo that includes a photo taken of the two-time World Heavyweight champion during his March 29, 1966 against Muhammad Ali at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. An 8" x 10" black-and-white image that is housed in a frame which measures out to 18 3/4" x 18 3/4", "George Chuvalo - Canadian Heavyeright Champion - 1958-1979" is etched into the matte underneath the photo, which is signed by George with a silver marker ink signature that displays without issue. Also sporting a plaque above taking about his career and the fact he was never knocked down, a Frameworth hologram is affixed at the bottom left hand corner of the image and is accompanied by a COA. Also including a signed 8" x 10" photo of Jake LaMotta that has been autographed with a silver ink signature and includes his "Raging Bull" inscription underneath in matching ink, the autograph displays well while the image is housed in a simple black frame that shows light wear to the edges/corners and measures out to 12" x 15". Having had a Superstar Greetings hologram affixed to the bottom right hand corner of the image, their COA will also be included. Finally, the last two (2) photo included come in the form of 8" x 10" images of Mike Tyson and Chuck Wepner that have been individually signed by the respective figures. Both showing light surface/edge/corner wear, Tyson has signed his image with a large black marker ink signature while Wepner has penned his autograph in silver marker ink. With both autographs displaying well overall, both have had PSA plus Sports Memorabilia.com holograms affixed to them and are accompanied by matching COAs. Of note, the Tyson image is missing its PSA cert but still checks out on their website.
