A staple in the City of Montreal between 1896–1960 who at times served as as a farm club of Major League teams such as the Philadelphia Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, the Montreal Royals remain famous for being the minor league club where Jackie Robinson got his start before ascending to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Having won league titles in 1898, 1922, 1941, 1946, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1953 and 1958, with the 1946 Royals recognized as one of the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time, offered here is this collection of Royals pictures that dates from the late-1920s to the late-1950s. With the oldest items included found in the form of a group of fifteen (15) La Presse newsprint images that date between 1928 and 1932, the full page images measure between 10" x 17 1/2" in size with some on the smaller end of the scale and others larger. Featuring beautiful colours and in some cases an advertisement, players featured include; James Robert Shawkey, Red Holt, Group of 6 (Buckalew, Dunagan, Smith, Radwan, Fowler and Gulley), Wilson Fewster, Aldrick Gaudette, Walter Gautreau, Gowell Claset, "4 Pitchers" (Smith, Thormahlen, Griffin and Pomorski), Lee Head, Jocko Conlan, Sol Mishkin, Walter Gautreau (Buckingham Cigarettes), Bill McAfee, Leo Magnum and Charles Sullivan. All presenting well over the images themselves, each shows toning from age while some show flaws such as small edge tears and missing pieces, small foxing areas and spot stains, creases, pin holes and fold lines that are worth mentioning for accuracy. Next, present is a group of fifteen (15) mid-1940s Parade Sportive pictures that includes examples of; Roland Gladu, Stan Breard, "Trio" (Gladu, Roy and Breard), Steve Nagy, Ray Hathaway, John Gabbard, Les Burge, Red Durrett, Jack Banta, John Jorgenson, Marvin Rackley, Al Campains, Herman Franks, the 1944 Royals team picture and the 1945 Royals team picture. All measuring slightly larger than 5" x 8", the images are found to be in generally good to excellent condition, showing relatively even toning throughout all and some overall light edge/corner wear. Additionally, the image of Campains shows some water staining, a small tear and a couple folds/creases while the image of Franks displays with some paper loss over the front that is worth noting for accuracy. Moving on, the lot also includes a group of ten (10) 1952 La Patrie images that includes the likes of Ed Roebuck, Walter Fiala, Carmen Mauro, Don Hoak, Don Thompson, Jim Gilliams, Hampton Coleman, Johnny Podres, Tommy LaSorda, Bob Alexander, Charlie Thompson and Mal Malletee, the gorgeous full colour images all measuring in the range of 11" x 15", in some cases a bit larger or smaller depending on how they were cut. All remaining vivid and in overall good condition while showing things light toning, creasing/fold lines, edge/corner wear, small liquid stains and surface wear, the lot also includes ten (10) 1958 La Patrie images of names such as; Dick Teed, Bob Lennon, Jim Koranda, Clyde Parris, Solly Drake, Jackie Collum, Sandy Amoros, George Anderson, Billy Harris and Bob Dolan. All measuring roughly 10 1/2" x 13 1/2" at their longest points with some a bit smaller and some a bit larger, the group shows flaws including tape marks/staining in the corners, fold lines/creases, light surface wear, toning and small edge tears/rips. Finally, to conclude the lot, over thirty-five (35), assorted newspaper clippings, photos and full magazines from various years that are highlighted by a team photo from 1958, an issue of Le Samedi from 1956 with a quartet of Royals over the cover, a cover of La Patrie from May 1955 that has numerous Royals images, including Don Drysdale, a disk photo cut out from 1954 with various players including Roberto Clemente, a team photo from 1938, a May 8th, 1950 issue of Life Magazine with Jackie Robinson over the cover and various team photos from 1935, dont miss out on this dandy lot chalked full of Montreal baseball history.
