Hailing originally from the Hockey Diversified NHL Goal Puck Program, we offer a trio of pucks that were used to score a hat trick by Boston Bruins star Ken Hodge. From the December 10, 1972 match vs California at Boston Garden, Hodge scored his 13th, 14th, and 15th goals of the season, with the Bruins doubling up on the Golden Seals 8-4. The first goal was scored on the power play at 8:08 of the second period, with Fred Stanfield and Mike Walton assisting. This was the Bruins 5th goal of the match, and it served as the game winner. The second goal of the hat trick was scored at 9:39 of the second period, assisted by Wayne Cashman. The third and final Hodge goal was scored at 12:15 of the third period, with Phil Esposito and Wayne Cashman assisting. Other noteworthy players in the match included Dom Marcotte who scored a pair, and the Golden Seal's Marshall Johnston who netted a hat trick. Each puck has a label with the date listed and the goal number in the match, along with a Bruins rubberized logo on the obverse. Each puck shows light use with some of the oils being released making each a bit greasy to handle.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately, this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-73 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter. Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for.
