Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
This magnificent little piece of hockey history is a ribbon that would have been worn by a Montreal Canadiens fan on an organized trip to Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens during the fabled arena’s inaugural season. This is the first such ribbon we have ever handled, a wonderful keepsake from a long ago trip to a 1-1 tie between the Habs and the Leafs on March 5, 1932. Silky to the touch, this vintage white ribbon measures approximately 6” x 2” and has “Voyage Montreal-Toronto” printed at the top, along with “Canadiens vs. Toronto au Maple Leaf Garden (sic)” and “Mars 5, 1932” below it. There is a bit of fraying along the top and bottom edges along with some creases and a few light reddish-brown stains on the bottom portion, none of which diminish this unique treasure’s display. The Leafs, who went on to win the Stanley Cup, opened the scoring when Charlie Conacher tallied 37 seconds into the second period. All was not lost for the Montreal faithful who traveled to watch les Habitants when the legendary Howie Morenz tied it midway through the third as the Canadiens battled the Leafs to a draw.
