Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
An extreme rarity dating back to the middle of the 19th century and a time approximately twenty (20) odd years before Lord Stanley, then serving as the Governor General of Canada, donated his now famous Cup, offered here is this pair of blades dating to circa-1870. Made by the Union Hardware Company of Torrington, Connecticut, the steel and leather construction offerings are stamped with "Union Hardware Co. - Torrington, Conn, USA" over the top of each platform, with the number "9" for the size appearing above that. Measuring out to an overall length of 10" with a blade width of 3/16th of an inch, the blade also sports stamps reading "Welded Tempered Skates". With many of this type of skate manufactured but nearly impossible to find a pair in like-new condition, the leather of the ankle supports is still present and soft/supple while the clamps work easily as well. Sporting no just light scratches and some minor scuffs over both the blades and platforms, a couple of dents appear in the metal heel cups as well but nothing to detract from the beauty these possess, having likely only been worn once or twice.
