Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
Won by a total of twenty (20) different franchises, including teams that have relocated to another city or changed their name, since the first one was played in 1967 to crown an overall champion between the winners of the National Football League and American Football League, the Super Bowl has become arguably the most famous event in all of sports, with the event contributing to a superhero like lore for the winners and over a billion dollars in economic impact. Offered here, we present this collection of Super Bowl and other football memorabilia from the personal collection of Hockey Hall of Fame journalist Frank Brown that includes things such as programs, tickets and Brown's various media passes/accreditations. Paced by a group of seven (7) vintage programs that includes examples from the Super Bowl's of 1968 (Super Bowl II), 1972 (Super Bowl VI), 1973 (Super Bowl VII), 2003 (Super Bowl XXXVII - national version), 2006 (Super Bowl XL - national version) and 2008 (Super Bowl XLII - holographic stadium version cover). All in overall good condition for their efforts while showing signs of handling wear throughout, the program from Super Bowl II has a pen mark over the cover that is worth noting for accuracy while the group as a whole shows light wear to the edges/corners, covers and spines. Also including an October 6th, 1968 program from a contest between the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints that was played at Yankee Stadium, other highlights include ticket stub's from the Super Bowl's of 2004 (Super Bowl XXXVIII) and 2008 (Super Bowl XLII - encased in Lucite), NFC and AFC media information books from 1970 that remain in overall good condition while showing expected handling wear and finally, vintage media guides for the Chicago Bears (1972), Dallas Cowboys (1972), Green Bay Packers (1972 x2), San Francisco 49ers (1972), Atlanta Falcons (1972), New York Giants (1972 x2), Minnesota Vikings (1972 x2), Washington Red Skins (1971 x1 and 1972), St. Louis Cardinals (1972), Philadelphia Eagles (1971 and 1972) and Detroit Lions (1972) which are all in overall good condition, showing just light wear from age and handling. For the rest of the lot, including various New York newspapers and Sports Illustrated issued from when the Giants won the Super Bowl in 2008 plus a World Football League "World Bowl 1974" program and sticker sheet, the lot concludes with a group of media passes/accreditations used by Brown at various NFL events throughout the years, including Super Bowl XLII in 2008. Found in a variety of styles and mostly all retaining their original laces/lanyard, most are found in overall good condition for their efforts and show just light handling wear. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. He was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
