Ed Broadbent led Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) from 1975-89 and was in the running to become the country’s Prime Minister in four federal elections during that time. John Edward Broadbent, CC, PC, was a Member of Parliament 1968–89 and 2004–06. Born 21 March 1936 in Oshawa, ON; he died 11 January 2024 in Ottawa, ON. Broadbent was a political science professor before he entered politics as a democratic socialist. He served as in parliament as a member of the NDP for 23 years, and was also president of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development. Recognized as a giant in Canadian politics and a fierce champion for ordinary Canadians, he founded the Broadbent Institute, a progressive think tank. He has signed his handwritten letter on Broadbent Institute letterhead. Dated September 30, 2014, Broadbent eloquently and sincerely extends birthday wishes to “Dear Taylor,” a political science student who he implores “to search for more ways to bring a greater level of justice to Canada and the world.” Broadbent was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2001.
