Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
Kicking up a snow shower here is all-time great Jean Beliveau, who put the brakes on the Montreal Canadiens' plans back in the day. Beliveau decided not to join the Habs after his two years of junior hockey with the Citadels but rather remained faithfully in Quebec City to play for the senior Aces. The mention of Big Jean as the scoring champion on the front of the blank-backed card sheds some light about the release date of the little cards, known over the years as "Laval Dairy" but actually produced by Bedard & Donaldson. The "Courtoisie Laiterie Laval" on the bottom front here (Courtesy Laval Dairy) likely contributed to the notion that the dairy issued the cards. We know from speaking with Mr. Beliveau years ago that he endorsed Laval Dairy products and was given a big stack of his own card to hand out - interesting. This card was just graded by PSA as Good 2. These Beliveau pre-rookie cards are difficult to find in high grade due in part to the card being the first numbered in the 109-card set.
