Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
Seeing action in just 84 NHL career games including playoffs in parts of three seasons and split between Hartford and Philadelphia despite a promising future, Fred Arthur was selected 8th overall by Hartford in 1980. In October 1982, the Philadelphia Flyers sent Arthur to the Maine Mariners, their American Hockey League affiliate, while recovering from an injury. Faced with the choice between a professional hockey player or the opportunity to pursue his education in medicine, Arthur chose the latter and retired from professional hockey. He became the only NHL draft pick to choose a medical career over one in hockey. With such a short career, signed items are rare, and we offer a circa 1981-82 Flyers team-issued photo signed by Arthur and encapsulated as "Authentic Auto" by PSA/DNA. At approx 4" x 6", Arthur is pictured in his full uniform including Cooperalls. He has signed in blue ink, adding "Best Wishes". The signature displays well, with this photo a must for Philly collectors.
