Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
The greatest player to ever grace the ice of the National Hockey League and still holding a total of 58 records set by him during his career even 25 seasons after he retired from the game, Wayne Gretzky would win a boat load of individual awards over the course of his remarkable career and lead the Edmonton Oilers to four (4) Stanley Cup championships in the 1980s. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame immediately after hanging up the skates in 1999, offered here is this lot featuring a New York Rangers jersey and Hespeler stick signed by "The Great One". Starting with the jersey, a CCM made offering with brand and size "L" labeling affixed to the inner collar, the front of the jersey is decorated with the familiar "Rangers" going diagonally down the chest in drop-shadow letters while the sleeves and verso have been styled with Wayne's famed number "99" in dual layer blue-over-red drop-shadow tackle twill numerals. Having had "Gretzky" spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed white twill nameplate at the top of the reverse, Gretzky has signed through the middle of the second "9" on the back with a silver marker ink signature that displays without issue while the jersey itself is also found to be in overall excellent condition despite a couple of small marks that appear. A PSA sticker has been affixed to the bottom of the signed number and comes with a matching COA.
For the stick, a Hespeler 5500 model example made to appear in the same style as the twigs used by Wayne during the 1997-98 season, "Gretzky" and "55 8" appear stamped over the upper shaft while a blue coloured "Jack the Gripper" grip is in place over the handle/knob. Never having been taped over the blade and remaining in overall excellent condition with some light wear/marks present from handling/age, Gretzky has signed the forehand side of the blade with a large black marker ink signature that displays well despite some fading. Originally an Upper Deck product, the spot where the company's hologram was once affixed can be seen on the blade near the signature. Having had a JSA sticker placed over the backhand side of the blade, a matching LOA will accompany the piece.
