Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
Playing in parts of five seasons with the Montreal Canadiens throughout the early-1950s which included winning a Stanley Cup championship in 1953, Paul Masnick saw short stints with Chicago and Toronto later in the decade, and finished his dozen-plus years of professional hockey in the IHL with the St. Paul Saints. Originating from his personal collection, we have a pair of Art Ross Tyer 1950-58 NHL game pucks, with one sporting an interesting history. Both in excellent condition showing light use and featuring the larger hexagonal rubberized orange crests in use until replaced by team logos in 1958, one puck has white stick tape placed over one side, with "Winning Goal April 6, 1952 Sunday - Canadiens 3 Boston 2 - 2nd Overtime Period 7:49 - Assisted by Harvey - 6th Game Semi-Finals" handwritten in blue ink, with the inscription definitely period. A quick Google check confirms the details. We should also note that the following match (Game 7) is infamous as Rocket Richard was injured and taken off the ice, only to return and score the winning goal. The game has been immortalized with arguably one of the most famous photos in hockey history taking place at the conclusion, when battered and damaged players Richard and Sugar Jim Henry shook hands. The thought of this very puck used to score an overtime winner in the renowned 1952 Stanley Cup semi-finals between Boston and Montreal is magical! A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
