Sporting some of the most iconic head gear ever seen in the sport, with his famous “Stitches” specimen ushering-in the era of the painted mask, Gerry Cheevers enjoyed a lengthy career in both the NHL and WHA, with HOF enshrinement occurring in 1985. A two-time Stanley Cup champion in the Boston Bruins who jumped ship to the World Hockey Association in 1972, where he played three and a half seasons for the Cleveland Crusaders. A three time time WHA All-Star, offered here is this lot consisting of a pro style WHA Cleveland Crusaders jersey of Cheevers and a pair of goalie skates attributed to have been worn by him during his time in the league. Starting with the jersey, a heavyweight durene knit offering made by Rawlings, both brand and size "50" labeling is affixed to the inner collar while a loop style fight strap has been added in on the interior. Decorated over the front with a Crusaders team crest in layered tackle twill that also sports beautiful chain-stitched embroidered details, the sleeves and verso of the garment have been accented with Cheevers' number "30" in sewn on single layer purple twill numerals while "Cheevers" is spelt out in matching style letters that have been sewn directly to the material at the top of the reverse. Of note, the jersey differs what Cleveland wore during their time in the WHA as their actual game jerseys never had a purple v-neck collar. Displaying wear via some puck marks over the front and sleeves as well as a repair underneath the front crest, spot staining over the right sleeve and reverse and finally, a repair to the bottom of the "3" on the reverse also. For the skates, all black in colour CCM made examples that are stamped with "11 1/2" and "Made in Canada" on the bottom of each skate near the toe, countless puck marks, nicks and abrasions are found over each cowling and boot while pilling exists on the inside of each tongue as well. Void of the original laces and showing some rusting to the blades, it is also worth noting that some of the chrome has worn away on both blade, with the heaviest amount coming off the blade of the left skate.
