This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Culminating with Al Michaels' famous "Do you believe in Miracles" as time ticked down in the final minute of the third period, the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team did the seemingly impossible on February 22nd, 1980 in Lake Placid, New York by defeating the powerful Soviet Union squad that had won gold medals at five (5) of the previous six (6) Olympic Games. Going on to claim the gold medal for themselves after a win against Finland two (2) days later to give the country their second ever gold medal in ice hockey at the games, offered here is this copy of Sports Illustrated's December 22nd to 29th "Sportsmen of the Year" double issue that has been signed by twenty-two (22) members of the memorable squad. A subscription issue that sports an address label over the bottom left hand corner of the front cover, an image of the celebration after defeating the Soviets is featured in the middle of the cover, flanked by images of gold medals from the Games. Displaying "The U.S. Olympic Hockey Team" at the bottom of the cover, the magazine remains in overall good condition with light wear to the edges and corners that is worth noting for accuracy. Signed over the cover by twenty-two (22) players and staff in a mix of blue and black marker ink, those that have autographed the piece include; Herb Brooks, Jim Craig, Ken Morrow, Mike Eruzione, Craig Patrick, Bill Baker, Bob Suter, Buzz Schneider, Dave Christain, Dave Silk, Eric Strobel, Jack O'Callahan, John Harrington, Mark Johnson, Mark Pavelich, Mark Wells, Mike Ramsey, Neal Broten, Phil Verchota, Rob McClanahan, Steve Christoff and Steve Janaszak. Accompanied by a PSA/DNA LOA, all the autographs display well and without issue.
