Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024

Hailing from the NHL Goal Puck Program, we have a trio of goal pucks including one from 1972-73, and a pair from 1973-74. Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. The first puck was used by Pierre Plante to score the St Louis Blues 105th goal of the 1972-73 season at Pacific Coliseum on Jan 9, 1973 vs Vancouver (the incorrect date of Jan 8 is labeled to the puck, but due to the Canucks logo on the puck, it must originate from that match. Plante didn't score in the game, but he did score in the previous match on Jan 6 vs Atlanta). The next puck was used by Jim Lorentz to score the Buffalo Sabres 74th goal of the 1973-74 season at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium on Dec 2, 1973 vs Detroit. Lorentz scored his 7th and 8th goals of the season in the match, with the Sabres winning 6-1. The final puck was used by Ian Turnbull to score the Toronto Maple Leafs 91st goal of the 1973-74 season at MLG on Dec 8, 1973 vs Philadelphia. Turnbull scored the first goal of the match at 16:57 of the first on the power play. The Leafs lost to the Flyers 3-1. All three pucks show wear and marks to the Goal Puck Program labels and some darkening to the NHL logos (especially the Buffalo puck).
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately, this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-73 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
